SQUID INK CO.
SARAH HENDERSON

The Squid Ink Co was born in 2014 by founder Sarah, who was looking for a creative outlet to expand her career horizons. Three years on, the business has become known for its fun pop-up weaving workshops in places like Anthropologie, Lovecrumbs, Bakery47 and RadStudio, as well as selling colourful weaving kits sold across the globe to wannabe weavers!

Sarah's workshops go down a treat at our Noisy Girls Clubs. Get on our mailing list to make sure you don't miss any!

My background is in design. I studied Visual Communication at art school and I was pretty sure that I would end up in advertising or graphics of some kind after I graduated. I ended up working as the Brand Manager for an artisanal lifestyle brand for 6 years, visiting Morocco and India sourcing amazing products like vintage kilim rugs and handwoven palm leaf baskets. One Christmas my Mum bought me a little loom to have a go myself. I gave it a whirl and fell in love with the process. I then began spending time building my own company, The Squid Ink Co, which has organically developed into teaching beginner weaving workshops and selling my own weaving kits!

I love craftiness, it's good for the soul! I am always up for trying new things. The last couple of years I have tried knitting, crochet, macrame, pottery, lino printing, jewellery making... the list goes on! I'm a Gemini and believe it has some influence on my lack of attention span, as I am constantly looking for what's new to do!

"even the everyday mundane can be a huge source of inspo, like clashing coloured tiles in a public toilet or crazy fabrics on the seats of a bus."

I remember when I first started weaving I would spend hours on Pinterest searching for wall hangings and woven textiles to pin to my boards, and would use little elements of texture or colour from them to create my own work. I still do, but even the everyday mundane can be a huge source of inspo, like clashing coloured tiles in a public toilet or crazy fabrics on the seats of a bus.

I love being the big boss lady, it's so much fun! I feel so excited that I can make all the decisions + I can make my business what I want it to be. It's also been pretty helpful as I am a new mumma with a 5 month old and it's been so great having my partner help keep the company going while I sleep and hang out with the new love of my life!

My workshops are all about craftin' + chillin', I teach the basics of weaving from start to finish so that everyone can instantly relax into it, and not feel any time pressure to finish what you're working on during the class. My main goal is that people can switch off, have a laugh and learn a new skill which hopefully they go away passionate about!
